Surgeon in England March 1969 - August 1969

Now I am in Rochester , Kent at the beginning March 1969 . I was selected as A Senior House Officer in The Department of General Surgery for a period of six months from March 1969 to August 1969 . I am due to work in St.Bartholomews Hospital located on New Road , Rochester , Kent ME1 1DS ,UK . St Bart's Hospital is under the jurisdiction of Medway Community Health Care . Rochester is a beautiful and a historic town in Garden of England that is Kent . Rochester town is on the banks of River Medway , in South East of England about 30 miles ( 48 km ) from London . Rochester Town was the favorite of Charles Dickens who lived nearby at Gads Hill Place , Higham . My consultant was Mister AMB Tompkin FRCS , a very amiable English Gentleman who was my guide and a very good friend during those six months from March to August 1969 . Mr Tompkin was very punctual and a very courteous English man . Even now I can visualize MR Tompkin walking in either Operating Rooms , Surgical Clinic and / or Surgical Ward Rounds at 8 AM GMT Monday through Friday with a big genuine smile on his face wishing all ' Good Morning , Good Morning ' . It was my pleasure and a privilege to have worked under him , with him , and assisting him . I did all kinds of Gastrointestinal and Genitourinary Surgeries during that six month sojourn and I also made some extra money moonlighting at nearby Brook Hospital in Woolwich and also at Lewisham Hospital within the Borough of Lewisham and Greenwich . Those six months were hectic , very rewarding professionally as well financially . I gained as much surgical experience as I could muster and started saving money for my eventual return to Bhaarath ( India ) . In spite all my good work there was no job security and no permanency and by the end of August 1969 I had to move and I did move with Blessings from Mister AMB Tompkin FRCS and journeyed up north of England to Midlands to the banks of River Trent to Nottingham City and you will find me there at the beginning of September 1969 and if you are there you will se me , but you have to wait for me - see you !

England 1968

By February 1968 my working stay as a student in Indian YMCA Fitzroy Square London came to an end . As narrated in my previous chapter I moved into my new single bed-sitter accommodation in Shooter's Hill in Borough Of Greenwich in S E London and started my First Professional Work As A Surgeon in Woolwich War Memorial Hospital , Department Of Accidents And Emergency Surgery As A Senior House Officer From March 1968 To August 1968 . MR Samuel Levy FRCS was The Department Consultant . My work during those six months was daily from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday to Friday and every alternate day from 5 PM to 8 AM and alternate Weekends ( Saturday & Sunday ) starting at 8 AM Saturday to 8 AM Monday . I attended to all accidents inclusive of general surgery , orthopedics , surgical emergencies , injuries , wounds , burns , epistaxis , haematemesis , appendicitis et cetera . My past work experience in India ( Bhaarath ) came in handy and was very helpful to me in discharging my Professional responsibility with full credit to my past training back home . I never stepped out of hospital during those six months having my nourishment in the hospital mess itself . I had no social life , no pubs , no outing , and my only modus of relaxation is my addiction to smoking , which I shall get rid of at a later date and that is another story . I skimped and saved and as all my expenses towards accommodation and food were subsidized by National Health Service , my savings were satisfactory enough now to think of paying off my debts in England as well in Bhaarath ( India ). Towards the end of August 1968 I was given seven days leave to which I was eligible . I availed seven days leave and traveled to Preston in Lancashire by British Rail from King's Cross St. Pancras London and as arranged previously went to the home of my benefactor Sri.karri Satthireddy garu , paid off 100 Pounds Sterling which way back in December 1967 the good gentleman was kind enough to have given me unconditionally . I spent two days and one night in the gentleman's home , paid my respects to his Dharma Pathni ( Srimathi gaaru = Wife ) Saavithramma gaaru , thanked the couple profusely and returned back to my lodgings in Shooter's Hill , SE London . I sent back home money to pay off moneys I had to borrow from in laws for my travel and also to take care of my family upkeep . Now I was free from all debts and could say with pride that I will be my own boss from henceforth . I am ready to take up my next job as Surgical Registrar at Pembury Hospital Tunbridge Wells Kent with effect from September 1968 for next six months up to February 1969 - please wait for me with all the patience you can muster and I promise not to let you well wishers down , nor my folks back home - so be it !!! Surgeon England 1968 - 1970

February 1968 . Now I am Mister Murthy , MBBS Andhra U 1958 . , MS Andhra U 1962 . , FRCS Edinburgh . I have Full Registration of Indian Medical Council as well as of Great Britain Medical Council as A Qualified Surgeon . I was lucky to get a job as a Surgeon In National Health Service England . It gives me immense pleasure to write about NHS England : " Since its launch in 1948, the NHS has grown to become the world’s largest publicly funded health service. It is also one of the most efficient, most egalitarian and most comprehensive. The NHS was born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth, a principle that remains at its core. With the exception of some charges, such as prescriptions and optical and dental services, the NHS remains free at the point of use for anyone who is resident in England ." I am now a part of that second to none NHS England from February 1968 to November 1970 , a period of 34 months two months shy of three years and during that period I was A Senior House Officer , A Registrar and worked in the Departments of Accident Surgery , Emergency Surgery , General Surgery , Paediatric Surgery , Genito-Urinary Surgery , and Anaesthesiology . So I moved out of Indian YMCA , by tube from Warren Street to Charing Cross , by train from Charing Cross to Blackheath ,by bus from Blackheath to Woolwich War Memorial Hospital and took up lodgings in "Shooter's Hill a district in South East London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It borders the London Borough of Bexley. It lies north of Eltham and south of Woolwich. " My work station is Woolwich War Memorial Hospital and took first steps in my Surgical Journey In England of which I will describe after I settle down in Shooters Hill - do not go away and be with me all the way from Shooters Hill starting February 1968 and I will take you with me to all my Surgery Work Stations In England ending November 1970 - au revoir , so long , I will see you soon . !!!!
