August 1992 - August 2014

AnasooyAathreya-SeshaAnjaneyakrishna Athrison : August 1952 I joined Medical College . August 1992 , my career in Bhaarath India is coming to an end and USA beckoned me . My journey from East to West following the Sun across western ghats . My journey commenced in Guntur to Chennai to Mumbai ,across western seas to Heathrow London ,across Atlantic Ocean landed in Newark , New jersey on a warm day on that day in August of 1992. November 1992 my services are no longer needed in Bhaarath India. At the prescribed mandatory age of 58 I had to retire on a pension to give way to an youngster to have his/her say . I am free . For the next two years my sojourn in USA took me to Hasbrouck Heights,NJ ; Marlborough in Massachusetts and to Salt Lake City in Utah . November 1994 I have completed six decades of my existence on Mother Earth - a glorious memorable Sixty Years - Shashtti Poorthi in Vedic parlance . I am a living witness of 12 Suns each one five times meaning five times twelve Sixty - meaning of Shashtti poorthi = sixty years completion . Lord krishna Lived For 120 years and this mortal krishna is halfway = 60 years = Shashtti Poorthy. I returned back to my home in Krishna Nagar Guntur and celebrated The Vedic Ritual of my Shashtti Poorthy on that tenth day of November 1994. That was the last of my association with my home , my town Guntur and everything else I was born into . I sold my Maaruthi Cairo Dust Car , My Ancestral Home and now I have nothing left of my own - I am materially , philosophically free of all my Embryological Connections with my home town Guntur but not with my Country of Birth that is Bhaarath and free to savor my life in USA for all It's worth . So I returned back to USA by the end of 1994 and from 1994 to 2014 I am a pendulum back and forth between Bhaarath and USA worth and wherever I was I made a name for myself and I am happy to say I am A Survivor being an American while in USA and an Indian while in Bhaarath . I studied Gerontology at U Mass Boston , worked for the welfare of Seniors in USA as well in India , had more time with my own family . I traveled across America from Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean , lived in several places in New Jersey , New York State , Marlborough in Massachusetts , Salt lake City in Utah , Maple valley in Seattle Washington , Savoy and Champaign in Illinois , saw Chicago , New York City The Big Apple and since December 25 of 2011 in Brighton Town a suburb of Rochester City , Monroe County , Finger lakes Region in Upstate New York and built up a happy rapport with all Brightonians , had a good time among very helpful friendly people of Brighton - Town Clerk Daniel Aman , Elder Source Felicia Davis , Visiting Nurse Nicole Swirzer RN , Star program Transport Jaqueline Hicks , Fish program Transport Marie , Lift Line Medicaid Transport , My beloved Primary Care Physician Doctor Mala Ratan Gupta MD , my Cardiologist Doctor Maurice E.Varon MD , my Eye doctor Mark S.Jacobson MD , my Apartment manager MS Allison , my Brighton Food Cover and my Brighton Your Ward Robe and My Senior center and so many memories . Again that memorable month in my life August , come August Tenth 2014 I am back in Secunderabad Bhaarath India and I eagerly await the opportunity to meet one and all in India - So Be It - what will be will be , Be happy , keep smiling - Krishna . My Life In Guntur 1983 - 1992

Life outcome is based upon three influences - 1. Parents and society in which born and brought up ; 2. Self - what one sets out to achieve by personal efforts , dreams , ambitions ; 3. Destiny - predetermined . I never thought I would become A Doctor - that one is father's influence . I became A Surgeon , Studied and Worked in England , Migrated to USA - my efforts , my dreams , my ambition . Became Professor and HOD Surgery , Director of Medical Education - all because of Destiny . I could have become A Professor of Pediatric Surgery in 1964 and again in 1976 but both times it was denied and I was reconciled . I should have become A Professor of Genito-Urinary Surgery in 1978 yet again Destiny decreed negative . Then in 1983 I became Professor of Surgery and General Surgeon junior most among four Surgical Units in Guntur Medical College / Guntur Government General Hospital where back in 1952 I joined as a first year medical student . Within a short span of seven years by 1990 I became Chief Professor of Surgery , First Surgical Unit , HOD Department of General Surgery , Additional Director of Medical Education , Dean , Medical Superintendent and on 30 November 1992 at the age of 58 years I retired As Director Of Medical Education . I built A House in my ancestral land in Guntur , Krishna Nagar ( my namesake ) , had my own Car Maruthi Cairo Dust , became A grandfather Ameya , got my Green Card and migrated to USA - all a fast moving kaleidoscopic meteoric events. My role as A Professional in State Government Medical Education Service in Bhaarath ( India ) has come to end by the end of 1992 and now I am on the threshold of my life in United States Of America - I will see you all in USA - vini , vidi , visi - but I was conquered by America with my heart , soul still in Bhaarath ( India ) .

Guntur 1978 - 1983

It has been two years since January 1976 that I have been in charge of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Surgeon in Guntur Government General Hospital / Guntur Medical College . Me an FRCS but Directorate of Medical Education wanted an M Ch Pediatric Surgery qualification and I was asked to hand over to one such M Ch qualified surgeon and it was all for my own benefit in that I was posted in the same place as Urologist / Genitourinary Surgeon Guntur GGH / GMC and I took charge on January 01 , 1978 . From the time of 1970 when I returned from England expecting miracles this new incarnation as Urologist in 1978 is one of many and I am happy to state that I did justice at all times to the society . I had a satisfactory academic accomplishment which I already mentioned . Now for the next five years from January 01 , 1978 to July 31 , 1983 I had a very happy satisfying job , performing Prostatectomies , Lithotomies , various urological surgical procedures tackling renal problems such as Hydronephrosis , Chyluria , Calculi , Trauma , and Malignancy ; ureteric implantation - vesico-ureterostomy , Urinary bladder - calculi , VVF( vesico-vaginal fistula ) , Urethral strictures , Hypospadias and many more including pediatric urological procedures . I presented papers at conferences , but history repeated with the arrival of a M Ch in Urology in July 1983 to whom I handed over my responsibility . But a much more pleasant surprise awaits and I am happy to share with you which is , I was promoted as Professor of General Surgery cum Civil Surgeon and my academic career took an upward turn which began as on August 01 , 1983 and lasted up to November 30 , 1992 when as per the existing rules I retired at the age of 58 and I am eager to share with you all , that last nine years of my professional life which I will soon . Surgeon in England March 1969 - August 1969

Now I am in Rochester , Kent at the beginning March 1969 . I was selected as A Senior House Officer in The Department of General Surgery for a period of six months from March 1969 to August 1969 . I am due to work in St.Bartholomews Hospital located on New Road , Rochester , Kent ME1 1DS ,UK . St Bart's Hospital is under the jurisdiction of Medway Community Health Care . Rochester is a beautiful and a historic town in Garden of England that is Kent . Rochester town is on the banks of River Medway , in South East of England about 30 miles ( 48 km ) from London . Rochester Town was the favorite of Charles Dickens who lived nearby at Gads Hill Place , Higham . My consultant was Mister AMB Tompkin FRCS , a very amiable English Gentleman who was my guide and a very good friend during those six months from March to August 1969 . Mr Tompkin was very punctual and a very courteous English man . Even now I can visualize MR Tompkin walking in either Operating Rooms , Surgical Clinic and / or Surgical Ward Rounds at 8 AM GMT Monday through Friday with a big genuine smile on his face wishing all ' Good Morning , Good Morning ' . It was my pleasure and a privilege to have worked under him , with him , and assisting him . I did all kinds of Gastrointestinal and Genitourinary Surgeries during that six month sojourn and I also made some extra money moonlighting at nearby Brook Hospital in Woolwich and also at Lewisham Hospital within the Borough of Lewisham and Greenwich . Those six months were hectic , very rewarding professionally as well financially . I gained as much surgical experience as I could muster and started saving money for my eventual return to Bhaarath ( India ) . In spite all my good work there was no job security and no permanency and by the end of August 1969 I had to move and I did move with Blessings from Mister AMB Tompkin FRCS and journeyed up north of England to Midlands to the banks of River Trent to Nottingham City and you will find me there at the beginning of September 1969 and if you are there you will se me , but you have to wait for me - see you !

England September 1968

Pembury is a Cute Village , a suburb of Tunbridge Wells a large town in the western part of Kent , England , about 40 miles (64 km) south-east of Central London . The Hospital in Pembury goes under the name ' Kent and Sussex Hospital .' The Hospital lies just to the north-east of Tunbridge Wells and The Full Address is as follows : Kent and Sussex Hospital , Pembury , Tonbridge Road , Tunbridge Wells , Kent , TN2 4QJ, United Kingdom . Kent is referred to as Garden Of England Verdant and Vibrant . I Mister Murthy FRCS joined The Department Of General Surgery as A Senior House Officer on First Of September 1968 and worked there for six months until the middle of February 1969 and my Consultant was Mister J N Gibson FRCS a typical English Gentleman . I was happy to have been allowed to perform all varieties of General Surgical Procedures - Gastrointestinal , Genitourinary , and Pediatric Surgery . Overall it was a very nice Professional Experience , but as my tenure was coming to an end I took Time Off during the last week of February 1969 and spent a memorable three days and two nights in Paris . England 1968

By February 1968 my working stay as a student in Indian YMCA Fitzroy Square London came to an end . As narrated in my previous chapter I moved into my new single bed-sitter accommodation in Shooter's Hill in Borough Of Greenwich in S E London and started my First Professional Work As A Surgeon in Woolwich War Memorial Hospital , Department Of Accidents And Emergency Surgery As A Senior House Officer From March 1968 To August 1968 . MR Samuel Levy FRCS was The Department Consultant . My work during those six months was daily from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday to Friday and every alternate day from 5 PM to 8 AM and alternate Weekends ( Saturday & Sunday ) starting at 8 AM Saturday to 8 AM Monday . I attended to all accidents inclusive of general surgery , orthopedics , surgical emergencies , injuries , wounds , burns , epistaxis , haematemesis , appendicitis et cetera . My past work experience in India ( Bhaarath ) came in handy and was very helpful to me in discharging my Professional responsibility with full credit to my past training back home . I never stepped out of hospital during those six months having my nourishment in the hospital mess itself . I had no social life , no pubs , no outing , and my only modus of relaxation is my addiction to smoking , which I shall get rid of at a later date and that is another story . I skimped and saved and as all my expenses towards accommodation and food were subsidized by National Health Service , my savings were satisfactory enough now to think of paying off my debts in England as well in Bhaarath ( India ). Towards the end of August 1968 I was given seven days leave to which I was eligible . I availed seven days leave and traveled to Preston in Lancashire by British Rail from King's Cross St. Pancras London and as arranged previously went to the home of my benefactor Sri.karri Satthireddy garu , paid off 100 Pounds Sterling which way back in December 1967 the good gentleman was kind enough to have given me unconditionally . I spent two days and one night in the gentleman's home , paid my respects to his Dharma Pathni ( Srimathi gaaru = Wife ) Saavithramma gaaru , thanked the couple profusely and returned back to my lodgings in Shooter's Hill , SE London . I sent back home money to pay off moneys I had to borrow from in laws for my travel and also to take care of my family upkeep . Now I was free from all debts and could say with pride that I will be my own boss from henceforth . I am ready to take up my next job as Surgical Registrar at Pembury Hospital Tunbridge Wells Kent with effect from September 1968 for next six months up to February 1969 - please wait for me with all the patience you can muster and I promise not to let you well wishers down , nor my folks back home - so be it !!! Surgeon England 1968 - 1970

February 1968 . Now I am Mister Murthy , MBBS Andhra U 1958 . , MS Andhra U 1962 . , FRCS Edinburgh . I have Full Registration of Indian Medical Council as well as of Great Britain Medical Council as A Qualified Surgeon . I was lucky to get a job as a Surgeon In National Health Service England . It gives me immense pleasure to write about NHS England : " Since its launch in 1948, the NHS has grown to become the world’s largest publicly funded health service. It is also one of the most efficient, most egalitarian and most comprehensive. The NHS was born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth, a principle that remains at its core. With the exception of some charges, such as prescriptions and optical and dental services, the NHS remains free at the point of use for anyone who is resident in England ." I am now a part of that second to none NHS England from February 1968 to November 1970 , a period of 34 months two months shy of three years and during that period I was A Senior House Officer , A Registrar and worked in the Departments of Accident Surgery , Emergency Surgery , General Surgery , Paediatric Surgery , Genito-Urinary Surgery , and Anaesthesiology . So I moved out of Indian YMCA , by tube from Warren Street to Charing Cross , by train from Charing Cross to Blackheath ,by bus from Blackheath to Woolwich War Memorial Hospital and took up lodgings in "Shooter's Hill a district in South East London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It borders the London Borough of Bexley. It lies north of Eltham and south of Woolwich. " My work station is Woolwich War Memorial Hospital and took first steps in my Surgical Journey In England of which I will describe after I settle down in Shooters Hill - do not go away and be with me all the way from Shooters Hill starting February 1968 and I will take you with me to all my Surgery Work Stations In England ending November 1970 - au revoir , so long , I will see you soon . !!!! I Am An FRCS

I am inching towards my goal of becoming A FRCS , Fellow Of Royal College Of Surgeons . From last week of December 1967 to the last week of September 1968 , a period of nine months , a time spent in toil , sweating , with frugal meals and at times fasting , studying , attending lectures at Royal College of Surgeons London , and with the help of books borrowed from Lewis lending library and all the struggle worth the trouble and every available period of time well spent towards achieving the purpose of my coming to England and with all thoughts of family and social life tucked away at the back of my mind I crossed the first step overcoming the hurdle of Part One of F R C S examination by end of February 1968 with success and felt on top of the world . I am now ready for Part Two of F R C S examination . I again went through intense preparation attending Clinical Lectures at Brooke general Hospital under the guidance of One Venerable British Professor Of Surgery by Name MR. Wheatley . Please note Surgeons in Britain are ' MISTERS ' whereas Physicians are Doctors . I am on my way of transformation from Doctor Murthy towards being MISTER MURTHY ( during my three year sojourn in England I was referred to as Mister Murthy ) .By the end of September 1968 I was ready to take my Final FRCS Examination and chose Edinburgh Scotland . The Royal College Of Surgeons Of Edinburgh Scotland was Founded in 1505 during The Reign Of King James IV Of Scotland and is located at Nicolson Street Edinburgh EH8 9BZ Scotland . I traveled by British Rail an express train ' Flying Scotsman ' from London Kings Cross Station to Edinburgh Waverley Station , lodged in a hotel and took My Final FRCS Examination during the last week of September 1968 and on That Memorable Day Friday 27 September 1968 I Was Declared ' MISTER MURTHY , FRCS EDINBURGH ' . My Joy knew no bounds and Ilst no time in sending a cable back home to my family about my achievement and I did not forget to inform my benefactors Sri Karri Satthireddy gaaru of Preston and Doctor Karri Nooka Raaju of Kingston upon Thames . It is time to earn my livelihood , make some money , repay 100 pounds ( I did not forget ) given to me by Sri Karri Satthireddy gaaru , and so it is time to talk about my professional experience as a surgeon , but before that I need some time to relax , recoup , replenish , and look back with joy . I will return back soon !. AnasooyaAthreyaSeshaAnjaneyakrishna

England

During those years of my stay in England from December 1967 to November 1970 , I had to focus all my energies at what I am doing in obtaining my FRCS degree and my profession as a Surgeon . My thoughts constantly go back to my family whom I had to leave at my last station of Surgical career in Bhaarath and that was in Kakinada , East Godavari District , care of an elderly Braahmin couple Srimathi and Brahma Sri Mothadaka Sathyanarayana gaaru who were kind enough to take care of them till my family had to move with reluctance on my part to in law's place at Palakol West Godavari District . It was not a happy move but what can I do however much I wished for my family to be with me in England which I could not afford at that time for lack of resources , apprehension of living conditions in a foreign land , uncertainty about my prospects in England , fear of unknown , all forces combined to force me in leaving my family behind . Now with a hind sight I regret that decision and it would have been better if I had taken my entire family to England and faced the consequences come what may . But it is now all water under the bridge and it is one of several missteps that I took in my eight decades . As I already remarked life is like a flowing river with precipitous waterfalls , floods , droughts and at times placid smooth flow . I did my best I think so given the situation at that given time , may be it is of divine purpose and predetermined and to some extent may be I alone am responsible . That is what happened which I can not undo at the present . So let me get back to that period of 1967 on wards regarding my life in England and I will be happy to share with you and it is up to you to take it at it's face value provided you have the time and inclination and my only request is not to judge me in any way which may be harsh because I am sensitive and can not stand any emotional backlash at present - so be it hakuna matata , my motto be happy not to worry . London V

My Life In London Part Five – Food and Drink I was born A Vegetarian in An Orthodox Thelugu Braahman Family and I had been A Strict Vegetarian . My staple diet is rice with a curry , mango pickle , and buttermilk . But in Indian YMCA and in London in particular in those days of 1967 – 1970 Vegetarian food is difficult to get . I had to eat to survive . Breakfast is mostly bread toast or corn flakes and a cup of coffee. Lunch is a small bowl of rice with lentil soup . Dinner is some rice and curry or a scoop of mashed potato . I did manage with this frugal sustenance . London is famous for it’s pubs like ‘ Dog and Duck ‘ , ‘ Lamb and Flag ‘ , ‘ The Lamb ‘ , ‘ The Tavern ‘ , ‘ Black Friar ‘ , ‘ The Inn ‘ , ‘ Traveler ‘ , ‘ The Crown ‘ etc . One day out of curiosity I went to a pub with all trepidation and was fascinated by the buzzle and bon home . I was not used to any alcoholic drinks like Beer , Whisky etc and hesitatingly I approached the Bar Tender and inquired whether he has Any Soft Drink and his answer ( even today after nearly 50 years I remember so well ) was ” You Name It , I Got It ” and so pleased I was with that beautiful flowery response , I requested for A Glass Of Orange Juice . I must confess over the next three years of my stay in England ( 1967 – 1970 ) I did occasionally have a glass of beer , but that was very infrequent . Now coming to food one day in my outing ( mark my word Outing not Dating ) I went to Lords Cricket Ground to see a cricket game and I ate without knowing A Burger bought from a street vendor and never again I made that mistake and later on in 1971 when I was back in Bhaarath I made amends by going on penance to VaaraNaasi and apologized before Goddess Mother Annapoorna . But back in England in those three years of my stay between 1967 and 1970 I confess I did eat Fish and Chips most famous British Dish and once or twice Tandoori Chicken . Now I did confess and back in Bhaarath from 1971 on wards to this day 2014 I am A Vegetarian 100 % and for a few years even A Vegan not touching any animal product like milk , cheese , butter etc . But now for the past ten years from 2004 on wards I am A Vegetarian not even An Ovarian . But in England I am A Survivor and a strong believer in the axiom ‘ Be A Roman While In Rome ‘ so I tried to be A Britisher in Britain . In Britain the dietary habits are as Very Heavy Breakfast , frugal lunch , and at night depending upon one’s taste it will be in an ascending order either A Supper , or A Dinner , or A Feast . But in Paris breakfast is very meager which I experience while visiting Paris for three days later on . So there you are I confessed , bared my soul before Human and DIVINE and hope that future destiny will look at me kindly with all understanding compassion and affection – so must be all of you ?

My London IV

Let me digress a little . I was asked how I remember all about my life way back from second half of December 1967 nearly a half century ago . I am happy to inform that my memory is good and I can with felicity retrieve information tucked away in the deep crevices , niches , nooks , corners , gryri and sulci of my brain which inhabits the space between my two ears . My eyes and ears may at times try to play truant , but not my memory . So here I am ready to go forward with my narration in my own way . I have already mentioned various underground tube stations I have been to starting from my base Warren Street Tube Station and the following activities were what I undertook . I posted two inland letters to my benefactors Doctor Karri Sattiraju at Kingston upon Thames and my guardian angel Sri Karri Sattireddy gaaru of Preston Lancashire , thanking both of them profusely for their help which gave me much needed confidence and security to survive in London during those initial formative days and weeks . I also wrote by way of air mail post cards to my folks back in Bhaarath all bout me and about the help I received . I registered for my Primary FRCS Examination to take place during early February 1968 . I borrowed all necessary medical books from the Lewis Lending Library . I started appearing for classes at RCS Lincoln Inn Fields . I informed Indian High Commission about the purpose of my arrival in England . I registered with unemployment welfare department Holborn and received seven pounds sterling . I obtained full registration of General Medical Council . I met my would be advisers Doctors M D RAM FRCS and P K DATTA FRCS . Now in all earnest I started preparing for my Primary FRCS due in February 1968 . I am working hard , learning , studying , working , and doing what all I can in my 33 rd year of life , me again a student having been An Assistant Professor Back In Bhaarath , but I can't live on what I had been , but focus on what I have to be as at that time during the waning days of 1967 and approaching cusp of 1968 . Wish me well and I will not disappoint my well wishers and my family - so be it ? AnasooyAathreya-SeshaAnjaneyakrishna

London Part Two

Second half of December 1967 . Winter looming ahead . Cold creeping in and I am not used , but what can I do , grin and bear . I need to get out and start striving to achieve my aim . I need two essential things to go about in London , so from a near by shop I bought ' A to Z London Pocket Book ' the most essential tool to walk about or commute in the streets of London , it will tell me every street , every nook and corner , every niche , every location in London Metropolis ; this book is so important every taxi driver in London had to have one on board and in fact one can not be licensed to be a London Taxi driver unless he / she is thorough with this A to Z , but of course it was not my intention to become A London Taxi Driver , my goal is to become A Fellow Of Royal College Of Surgeons and A to Z London is so important for me to go where no one that is me gone before , so that is why I bought A to Z London ( I forget how much I paid for it ). The second one is A Free Copy of A Map of London Underground Railway System famously known as 'The London Tube ' which is available everywhere including downstairs at reception counter of Indian YMCA which I had to request for a free copy followed by profuse thanks from me and a smile from the management . So now I am busy with my routine of serving breakfast and dinner in the dining room and after I have fulfilled my obligation and satisfied my own hunger , I got busy understanding thoroughly A to Z London and Tube map , which I am happy to say I have accomplished in no time and am ready to hit the streets of London Metropolis nay Megapolis - okay na Here I come London - wait for me and if you wish you may join me - have time have inclination will go out , you may see what I have done ! After my guardian angel Doctor Karri Nookaraju left after settling me , I spent my first night in Indian YMCA Students' Hostel . My room is a small bed room with no other facilities except a bed . This is Indian YMCA Students Hostel at 41 Fitzroy Square London W1T6AQ . Here I am destined to stay from Sunday 10 December 1967 to Thursday 29 February 1968 . I am a volunteer student guest paying Seven shillings for bed , breakfast and dinner and me serving as a volunteer server in the dining hall at breakfast and dinner times , same as a server boy in our Indian Restaurants and I can have my breakfast and dinner after all the other fully paying residents have finished theirs'. I paid my first week rent Seven shillings and I have now 101 pounds sterling on hand courtesy Sri Karri Satthireddy gaaru . My hour starts me getting up at 5 AM GMT ( Plus 5 1/2 IST and Minus 5 US ET ) , ready by 6 Am GMT and present myself down stairs in the dining hall to do my duty and serve all the other boarders and then have my breakfast of two pieces of toast and coffee . I met the management who are all Kerala Christians , Thomas , Joseph et cetera who are more English than the natives and I was told to come down fully dressed with a Coat and a tie which luckily I had one pair . This Indian YMCA was founded by A Kerala Christian Gentleman by name MR K T Paul in 1920 ; he was the then Secretary of Indian YMCA in London . My day starts after serving and me having breakfast , going out into London Metropolis doing what and for what purpose I will narrate in my next part and return to Hostel by 6 PM GMT ready to serve dinner , and have my dinner and the end of day , not for me , I had so much to do to achieve my purpose of coming to England to become A FRCS Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons - so please stay with me to wish me well and I will tell you what things I have done and achieved in coming days - Please wait for Part Two !!!!! It was way back in 1954 I left my home town Guntur when I was 20 years young . Now in December 1967 , my D-Day Departure day , I am leaving India when I am 33 years young adult . I have wings thanks to my travel agent 'Trade Wings' and flying courtesy 'MahaRaaja' Air India International Flight 'Kanishka'. Back in 1967 it was not a nonstop flight but a flight of 'take-off -hop-stop-transit-fly- and landing-touch down' and at every stop I had to leave the aircraft and wait in transit lounge before takeoff again . It was Saturday December 9, 1967 ten pm Kanishka took off from Meenambaakkam Airport Madras - a short hop and stop at Santa Cruz Airport Bombay - transit lounge had a free cup of warm coffee courtesy Air India , in those days Air India was very nice and Maharaaja was courteous but not anymore . Next stop Cairo Egypt where an Arab served me not so good coffee and charged me one shilling and I am three pound sterling minus one shilling . Next time I will be careful and shall not accept anymore coffees . On board food was good and service was very satisfactory . Now we landed in Zurich Switzerland and for the first time on the way to transit lounge I experienced bone-chilling cold and my attire was not suitable for such a weather , I have to live and learn to survive . A short hop and Kanishka landed in Orly Paris and at that time I had no idea that I will be back in Paris at a later date , so be it . Finally dawned A-Day Arrival Day Sunday , December 10, 1967 I was in Heathrow London International Airport , no problem with Immigration - I have employment Visa , no worries about customs as I have only A Mango Spicy Pickle and wondering about what was going to happen and then I heard a message - Do You Hear That My Friends - Here It is - " A Visitor by name Dr K Nooka Raaju a close friend of Satthi Reddy Karri of Preston is waiting for Passenger R B Krishna Murthy at Victoria Terminus " - my heart raced with joy all fears apprehensions trepidations worries forgotten and I am on cloud nine . I took my meager luggage got into Airport Bus paid 7 shillings , now I am left with two pounds 12 shillings and traveled through streets of London , my first view of London on A Sunday with very little traffic on the roads and in due course I am at Victoria Terminus in the heart of London and you have to abide while I step forward with bated breath to meet my savior Dr K Nooka Raaju courtesy Karri Satthi Reddy - let me take one step at a time and see what happiness awaits me - !!!! Now I am in Madras ( Chennai ) a Transit Passenger on my way from Bhaarath to Britain . I alighted in Madras ( Chennai ) from Circar Express from Kakinada on Thursday 7th December 1967 and was in transit for two days , that is Thursday 7 and Friday 8th December 1967 . Let me step back . As soon as I was freshened up I made a bee line to my travel agents ' Trade Wings ' located on Mount Road ( Anna Salai ) and confirmed my Flight by Air India International Maharaja scheduled for Saturday 9th December 1967 and courtesy of Trade Wings I dispatched a cable telegram to my would be benefactor Sri Karri Sathi Reddy gaaru in Preston , Lancashire , England informing Him of my Air India Flight Number and arrival time at Heathrow Airport London hoping for something helpful . Then I made a visit to British Deputy High Commission and for the first time spoke with a stiff upper lip Englishman , a clerk obviously but for me at that time seemed to be a very important official and sought and obtained assurance regarding my employment cum study visa . My travel itinerary is 10 PM IST Saturday 9th December 1967 Madras ( Chennai ) - Bombay ( Mumbai ) - Cairo ( Egypt ) - Zurich ( Switzerland ) - Orly ( Paris ) - Heathrow ( London ) Sunday 10th December 1967 One PM GMT . Back in my hotel to rest , relax , and to take a breath . Friday 8th December I was in the portals of Reserve Bank of India Lal Bahadur Sastry Road and obtained A Foreign Exchange of THREE BRITISH POUNDS STERLING courtesy of Indian Government ( how does anyone expect me to survive with Three Pounds , I had no idea only hope that destiny will take care of everything when the opportune time arrives ) . Saturday 9th December 1967 I spent time doing some shopping suitable for stay in England and restless hours full of apprehension and trepidation regarding what future holds but seeking solace in the company of my family during those few hours before my eventual departure . Transit stay is coming to end and friends be ready to fly with me all the way - I need your Best Wishes and Divine Blessings when I arrive at Heathrow London - let us see what happens !!!!! 6th December 1967 Wednesday - began my journey into the unknown , a sojourn I dared to undertake , a travel to a land where no one of my family had gone before or since .I was relieved of my duties as on Tuesday 5th December 1967 and my colleagues had given me farewell . First leg of my journey commenced at 2 PM IST by train an express train named ' Circar Express ' a train that originated in Kakinada Station and traveled south along the Coast of Bengal through the Circar Districts of Andhra , hence the name Circar Express . Circar means Government actually named so by Colonial British Government which had a direct rule over this area until August 15 , 1947 . The train's final destination is Madras ( Chennai ) stopping at several places along the way and it was a pleasure to meet friends and relatives along the way - let me take you along with me . The train Circar Express left Kakinada Railway station at 2 PM IST Wednesday , 6 December 1967 me in a sleeper compartment and some of my close friends and students came to the station to bid me bon voyage - Thanks ; first stop Samarlakota half hour away where one of my students who traveled with me handed over a letter he received from his relative in England who promised to help me settle down in England ; the student's name is Karri Sesha Reddy and his relative is one Sri Karri Satthi Reddy gaaru a refugee from Burma forced to flee when Japan invaded Burma ( Myanmar ) during 2nd world war . He was A British subject an indentured laborer . Sri Karri Satthi Reddy gaaru migrated with family and settled in Preston near Manchester UK Midlands . Preston is a textile-manufacturing town in Lancashire on the banks of River Ribble in the industrial north of England Midlands . More about that gentleman Sri Karri Satthi Rddy gaaru after I reach England . Meanwhile Thank You Student Sesha Reddy who is now a successful physician in Kakinada , he gave me tremendous hope and confidence to face my future in that far away land of unknown ( to me ) . Next stop is Rajamahendravaram a historic town on the banks of mighty River Goadavari ( Gowthami ) where my sister and her family came to wish me well on my way - thanks and bless you sister . Next stop was Bhimavaram and here I was greeted by my inlaws . By evening the train reached Vijayawada a major junction closest to my birth town Guntur and here I was met by my cousin brothers who wished me well - thanks all . By 8 PM the train halted at My Guntur Town where all my family members , sisters , brothers and all bid me farewell with tears and for me a very emotional farewell and a painful parting . That was it and the train left Guntur with a heavy heart and even the train could feel the emotional stress . I retired to my upper wooden berth and slept fitfully as the train rumbled along on it's way and by next morning 7 AM Thursday , 7th December 1967 I alighted at Madras ( Chennai ) Central Railway Station and by now I was quite familiar with that buzzling metropolis on the southern shores of Bay of Bengal . I have arrived at the port of my embarkation , took my luggage , booked into a nearby NO STAR hotel , freshened up , and ready to go into the city to make preparations for my departure . Let me get my thoughts in proper order and then I will tell you what I have done on that eventful day .

United Kingdome Here I Come : It is early November 1967 . I have completed four years stay at Rangaraya Medical College Kakinada Andhra Bhaarath as Assistant Professor General Surgery / General Surgeon / Anesthesiologist . My desire to go to United Kingdom and to become a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons FRCS has become stronger that made me take three steps as a starting point - 1. Applied for Study cum Employment Visa to British High Commission in New Delhi ; 2. Requested Director of Medical Education in Hyderabad for a grant of 3 years study leave ; 3. Applied for Passport . Let me take the third step first and narrate the problems I faced - way back in 1960s it is so difficult to get A Passport for an ordinary law-abiding citizen which I was - I am not rich , I had no political influence , I was an ordinary citizen ,- so I was asked to prove a.that I am A Citizen of India , b. to produce A No Objection Certificate from My Government , c. to prove that I have enough financial resources to travel to and back from foreign lands without causing any financial problems to Mother India , d. to produce police clearance certificates from Police Departments of all places I lived and worked , and e. guarantors who will be responsible for my conduct , for my stay abroad and for my return back without causing any problems to Mother India - You will be surprised that I managed to accomplish all by stooping , begging , borrowing , and do whatever it takes and lo and behold I got a 5 year valid Passport by end of November 1967 . Without any hassle I obtained An Employment cum Study Visa from The British Government valid for 10 years with a stipulation that I must be in London by the end of December 1967 . Again I had to sell myself , beg , stoop to receive permission from my government study leave for a period of 3 years with loss of pay but without a break in continuity of my service record which I am happy to say was all accomplished by First of December 1967 on which date I was relieved of my duties at Rangaraya Medical College Kakinada Andhra Bhaarath , given a farewell party , best wishes and blessings from all my colleagues . With the help of a local travel agent I purchased an Economy Passage flying Air India International from Madras to Heathrow London - I am packed , ready and my journey is scheduled to begin on 6th December 1967 , which I will be my pleasure to take you all along with me on that momentous journey , but you have to wait for my write up in the next episode soon enough - au revoir , bon homie , bon jour mon amigos -- AnasooyaAthreyaSeshaAnjaneyakrishna

It has been a while since I wrote about my Life . The stresses and strains of everyday life have withheld my hand from travelling back in time from the present into the past . Past is a ghost but a host to my memory , a test to determine how best is my path of memory . Now it is a hobby for me to now and then go back decades and see how it was then . Let me start in the past on May First 1962 and I took charge as Assistant Professor Of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Surgeon , Andhra Medical College / King George Hospital / Andhra University , Visakhapatnam , AndhraBhaarath . My supervisor was Dr SS Reddy , MS FRCS a not dependable person , I will tell you why . Pediatric Surgery is the newest and latest specialty created for the first time in my home state and I was due for promotion as Professor Of Pediatric Surgery by end of 1964 but for DR SS Reddy who day in and day out discouraged me in the department and literally forced me to request for a transfer to General Surgery which I did out of my own ignorance , naivety , and false faith in the honesty of DR SS Reddy , and that entirely changed the course of my destiny in that instead of becoming A Professor in 1964 , I had to wait for 19 long years to become Professor Of Surgery only in 1983 . But two good things came out of that wrong step I took - 1. I wanted to go to England and become an FRCS which I did in 1968 , and 2. I became Head of Department Of General Surgery in 1990 in Guntur Medical College , the same College where way back in 1952 I joined as a first year medical student . In that way I fulfilled my father's ambition of becoming A Doctor , my two fold ambition of becoming A Surgeon With MS and FRCS degrees , and my destiny's wish of becoming HOD Surgery , First Surgeon - first of 5 units and Dean of General Hospital all by the end of 1992 . Now let me go back and say few words about that one year as A Pediatric Surgeon 1962 - 1963 which was immensely satisfying, me becoming proficient in all aspects of Childrens' Surgery , Adult General Surgery , and Anesthesiology , all said and done a very satisfactory Academic Surgical Career , a fact , but I never did boast about that except to write now what happened - so there it is , I leave it to you to accept , me I will be back when I am in the mood to talk about my past ! Now the dust has settled . Exhilaration , excitement , joy , jubilation have abated . Reality is creeping in . April 1962 I am A Master in General Surgery , MS Andhra University . Now I am A Surgeon . I had A Dream and now it has come to fruition . When did all this start , way back in 1949 and now 1962 , thirteen long years of trials , tribulations , struggles , ultimately success . Way back in 1949 it was my Doctor Father's wish that I also should become a Doctor , follow His footsteps and take up His Family Practice , so the medical journey started in 1949 , three years of premedical education culminating in 1952 as me An Undergraduate MBBS medical student . My Doctor Father has seen me as a medical student in 1952 but could not wait to see me graduate six years later MBBS Andhra University in 1958 . From 1958 one year waiting , me dreaming to become A Surgeon and getting qualified to be admitted as A Post graduate student in Master's Program General Surgery from 1959 to 1962 and now my first dream bore fruit in April 1962 I became A MS General Surgery Andhra University , I had several more dreams to realize , I will come to them in due course , some fruitful and some not so , I can't win them all , but don't find fault with me I a lifelong dreamer and even today at 79 plus I have dreams . So for 13 long years Life has been one of hardship , struggle for existence financially , intellectually , academically , but in spite of all those agonizing pains Life Has Been Beautiful . I obeyed my Father , fulfilled His wish but could not take up His Family Practice as I had lost all round support and had to stand on my own two feet and face the world all alone and go forward where no member of my family has gone before me . I obeyed my Father and married the girl he chose for me , never had any idea of love , no idea of romance , no idea of dating , no idea of courting all those only in romantic novels not for me I had no time nor any inclination except to obey my Father and I am happy to say I have no regrets after 58 years of married life . Let me go back to April 1962 , now I am MS General Surgery and also me a father of two sons as on April 1962 , now in 2014 one son is an Engineer in Boston , Massachusetts , USA , and the second son Is A MS Surgeon , Hepatologist , Gastroenterologist , A Member of Liver Transplant Team all in University of Rochester Medical Center , Monroe County , Rochester , New York , USA . Okay so what about me in April 1962 - I was congratulated and blessed in Visakhapatnam by My Andhra Medical College Principal Professor Pinnamaneni Narasimha Rao , ENT , My King George Hospital Superintendent Professor VS Raghunaathan MD , HOD Surgery Professor MahankaaLi Krishnamoorthy MS , and my own Professor of Surgery Doctor Lingam Sooryanaaraayana MS . Friends I am Happy To Inform You All That Now I was promoted from Tutor in Surgery/Anesthesiology to the Position as ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of PEDIATRIC SURGERY in the same Institution under the supervision of Doctor SS REDDY , MS FRCS and a new dream started germinating and we all have to wait to see what it is , but for now as on May First 1962 I am Assistant Professor cum Pediatric Surgeon in the newly constituted first in the state a new department of Pediatric Surgery to deal with All Surgical Problems from Birth to the Age of 14 years and how is it going to be , let me take charge and will come back and let you know I promise ! My life as a Postgraduate student of General Surgery ( MS - Master of Surgery - General Surgery ) cum Tutor in General Surgery , Andhra Medical College / King George Hospital / Andhra University , Visakhapatnam , Andhra Bhaarath from August 1959 to April 1962 , was a three year tumultuous period , 3 years of hectic activity , sometimes frantic yet ecstatic , days without proper nourishment , at times sleepless nights , periods of exhaustion , times of exhilaration , occasional jubilation . First two years 1959 - 1961 I was totally involved in General Surgery and during the last year 1961 - 1962 I was Tutor in Anesthesiology and immersed both in Anesthetics and Surgery . During the entire three year period my day started at 7.30 AM , first making my own rounds of surgical wards - Men , Women , Children , Isolation , and Specialty wards - writing case sheet notes , dressings , suture removals , following instructions written down by senior staff , being nice to nursing staff and all round being a hard worker with all sincerity at my command . Twice a week outpatient clinic work , taking notes , assisting all my seniors and attending to my Boss in his work , twice a week operating rooms , first as a spectator , then as a second assistant , gradually promoted to being first assistant and finally allowed to do surgery under expert supervision . Then daily follow up rounds with my seniors , assistant professors and with Professor me standing well back . My duties as Tutor involved keeping an eye on first clinical year MBBS students , marking their attendance sheet , occasional guidance , and me as A PG student myself , attending to lectures by Assistant Professors , my Own Departmental Professors and some times visiting professors from Madras . Within our own department we were involved in group discussions , surgical cum journal club meetings , presenting papers , when time permits going to the library and go through voluminous books of Surgery . Then after about three months Professor summoned me to his sanctum sanctorum and ordered that I should do dissertation ( Thesis as required by University ) on Lymphadenopathy ( enlargement of lymph nodes ) with special emphasis on Cervical Lymphadenopathy ( enlargement of lymph nodes of neck - submental , submandibular , anterior&posterior jugular , pre&post auricular ) , and I need to make 5 copies , submit for approval one by the department , one to the university , one to the external examiner . one to the college library , and one my own copy , all this to be completed within the next 18 months , all this in addition to what I have already been doing and also weekly 24 hour in hospital duty and everyday evening rounds between 6PM and 7PM and if necessary get in touch with my seniors , Assistant Professors , and even the big man himself depending upon the seriousness of the situation . Now looking back to that era more than 50 years ago I am surprised how I survived that stress and strain , but I did overcome being in my late twenties . By April 1962 , I was ready with my Thesis which has been approved and commended , I could do on my own all Abdominal Gastro-intestinal surgical procedures , Femoral & Inguinal Herniorraphy , Thoracotomy , Cranial Burrhole for extradural hematoma evacuation , Orthopedic procedures , some urology and overall satisfactory general surgery covering most branches and I was fortunate in addition to becoming adept as an Anesthesiologist - Spinal , General , Endotracheal , Ambulatory bag assisted and controlled respiratory after curarization ,all of which will be a boon to me in future both in India as well in UK ( but I did not know this at hat time - I told you I keep going back and forth - you have to put up with my way of going about writing of my own life story , my privilege ) - Now The Great News April 1962 My Master of Surgery Examination Result Is Declared And I was informed That I Have satisfied two External Examiners Professors Chalapathinaidu and Ramanamoorthy gaaru , and two Internal Examiners Professors Krishnamoorthy and Sundararaamamoorthy gaaru , and my own Professor Lingam Sooryanaaraayana gaaru , I Doctor Balakrishna Murthy Ramaraju MBBS will henceforth be MS Master of Surgery General Surgery Andhra University Visakhapatnam which was registered by Andhra Medical Council April 1962 Gazette Notification as Doctor Balakrishna Murthy Ramaraju , MBBS , MS General Surgey and eligible for promotion as Assistant Professor - let us wait and see what Assistant Professorship is waiting around the corner , but for the present at the age of 28 my head is in clouds with my feet firmly on ground and I have achieved something which none of my family members ever expected that I am capable of something - for generations past in my family I am the first Post Graduate , but believe me I am neither arrogant , nor head strong except I am happy for myself , a little indulgence on my part - let me enjoy my glory and wait for me if you will . MS Gen Surgery by drbalakrishna I will take you through two years August1959 - May 1961of my postgraduate general surgery training leading to failure , disappointment , shame , pain , humiliation . I want friends to understand my pain , but I don't want you to share my failure . But all that I did overcome and tasted success in April 1962 and later I will share that belated joy . Failure was a blessing in disguise as I becam...e a specialist in another branch of Medicine , Anesthesiology , May 1961 - April 1962 , which will come to my rescue in future ( 1968 ) when in England and I will speak about it at the appropriate time . As I write about my life I keep going back and forth and that is how I like to go about it as it will take away the monotony of narration and keeps my mind alert and my brain active . But now is the time to give a comprehensive view of my general surgery training . In my Professor Lingam Sooryanaaraayana General Surgical Unit , I am the junior most of three postgraduate students - 1. DR P P Sreedhararao of Amalapuram East Godavari District , 2. DR S Balaraamakrishna of Gudivada Krishna District , 3. myself . Not only I had to obey the orders of Departmental two Assistant Professors Doctors G M N Swaamy MS and E N B Sarma MS , but also follow instructions from my two senior PG students as they are sort of my guides . Of course The Boss my Professor never even looked at me for the first three months but I know the great man is aware of me . In our general surgical unit there are four wards all dispersed in different areas of AMC / KGH huge campus , up hill , down hill- 1. Men's ward , 2. Women's ward , 3. Children's ward ( Pediatric Surgery is not yet a separate speciality in 1959 , but it will be in 1962 and I am going to be the first Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery AMC / KGH , AU in 1962 ) , and 4. Infectious surgical unit for cases of Tetanus , Gangrene , Cellulitis , Abscesses . Of course you all understand , I am speaking in a lighter vein , Men's ward is for hydroceles , hernias et cetera ; Women's ward is for mastectomies et cetera , Children's ward is for congenital abnormalities , cleft lips , and all surgical problems up to the age of 12 years . Now that I gave you a bird's ( I Like Eagle ) eye view of the infrastructure , back ground , foreground , the anatomy , the skeleton , the man power , the frame work of my General Surgery Unit of Professor Lingam Sooryanaaraayana MS , I can confidently take you along with me on my daily routine as a tutor , as a post graduate student , as the junior most cog in the giant wheel , part of it joy , at times pain , a burden to shoulder , a gradual ascent in academic life for the next two years August 1959 - April 1962 , but you have to wait and stick around , don't go away , I will be back !AnasooyaAthreyaSeshaAnjaneya

Now I am on my way of becoming A General Surgeon . On one fine morning in August 1959 I stepped out of Madras - Howrah Mail on to the platform of Waltair ( Visakhapatnam ) Railway Station , a station under the administrative jurisdiction of South East Railway Section of Bhaarath ( Indian ) Railways . I got into a cycle rikshaw and proceeded towards the down town of Visakhapatnam . I took up a temp...orary lodging and went in search of a rental property and was lucky to find a small two room portion in a corner house in third line Official Colony , Maharanipet ,Visakhapatnam 2 . The house belongs to A Vaishnavaite Brahmin Family managed by a middle aged childless couple - Srimathi Krishnavenamma gaaru and Sri Vaikhunttam gaaru . Rent Rupees 70 per month . I paid first month's rent in advance and settled down what little luggage I had just enough to get by . The house is right across the back side of King George Hospital with a small wicket gate serving as entrance . I can just walk across to my place of work , learning , my alma mater for the next four years . With the help of kind house owners I was able to engage the services of an elderly maid Varaalamma to fetch drinking water from a nearby municipal water tap as my rental house had only a well so deep and that too only of salt water and a house maid Kamalamma , both maids I paid Rupees 25 per month ( total Rs 50 pm ) , now that my pay as Tutor in Surgery is Rupees 250 per month - rent Rs 70 plus Maid service Rs 50 = Total Rs 120 plus Rs 100 for sustenance and other utilities - so just about able to eke out . With domestic arrangements settled I reported to duty as Tutor in Surgery , Assistant to Surgeon , MS General Surgery P G student to third General Surgical Unit of Professor Lingam Sooryanaarayana gaaru and my PG Education cum Practical Training as A General Surgeon is on Rails with effect from the last week in August 1959 and scheduled for completion by June 1961 if I can ( needs to be seen what happens and what future has in store for me ) . So friends wish me well and be with me as I take you through my PG MS General Surgery at AMC / KGH ./ Andhra University - Visakhapatnam - bear with me if you have time and patience ----

July 1957 I am done with Visakhapatnam and back in Guntur - August 1952 - June 1957 I have completed my MBBS and am now A Doctor . I completed the formality of Registering with Andhra Pradesh State Medical Council on July 7 , 1957 which now gave me an authority to practice Medicine and Surgery . I am now 22years , having lost my father and with no capital to set up Private Practice and having acquired a life partner as arranged by my late father , and in need of self support ,I applied for and lucky to be selected as A House Medical Officer , Government General Hospital , Guntur with a pay of Rupees Ninety per month which I began on First of August 1957 and thus became an earning member of the society . I had the good fortune to work under Physician Doctor P Narayanarao MD , Surgeon Doctor M Seetharamaswamy MS , Obstetrician Doctor S Sathyabhamareddy MD DGO for four months each , completing my first year of employment by the end of July 1958 . During that one year I have learned to give Injections IM , IV , SC , Give Blood Transfusion , Draw Blood Samples , Lab work , Set up IV drips , do Lumbar Puncture , Sternal Bone Marrow aspiration , Tapping of pleural effusion and Ascites fluid , Urinary Bladder Catheterization , Surgical Procedures - Hydrocoele and Hernia , Assist Abdominal Surgical procedures , Conducted Baby Deliveries in the maternity ward , Assisted C-Sections and Hysterectomies and in addition attending Emergencies , Accidents , Weekly 24 hour day & night call duties , so on and so forth . I have successfully completed my first year of House Medical Officer by July 1958 and was lucky enough to be selected as A Civil Assistant Surgeon , Employee State Insurance outpatient facility in Guntur with effect from August 18 , 1958 on a starting salary of Rupees Two Hundred per month which in those days I thought was quite a good pay . But I was restless and not content with just being An MBBS . During my one year as House Medical Officer ( August 1957 - July 1958 ) I dreamed about becoming A Surgeon and wanted to do Post Graduation In General Surgery . Thus while working as Civil Assistant Surgeon at Guntur and then In A Primary Health Center and In A Taluqa Hospital all within Guntur District for one year from August 1958 to August 1959 I gained good experience as an independent doctor attending to various medical and surgical conditions , dispensing medicines and being responsible for the welfare of public as well as government employees . I also cared for prisoners , law enforcement officials , and had to attend courts as a part of medico legal obligation . By the end of that fruitful year I could approach my superiors to recommend me for selection to Master Of Surgery Course ( MS post graduate course in General Surgery ) and my application was forwarded , was processed by State Government Directorate Of Medical Education and I was Selected For Two Year MS Degree Course In General Surgery 1959 - 1961 and I was happy and also lucky to be chosen as A Tutor in General Surgery cum A PG student to work under Professor Lingam Suryanarayana MS at AMC / KGH , Vizag back to my alma mater . I am thrilled and I am going to work , earn , and study . There you are friends I am again back in Madras - Howrah Mail on my way to Visakhapatnam in the last week of August 1959 - Please join me on my way as I travel back to my old college after a gap of two years , but this time I have to seek my own accommodation which I am confident I will be able to do . I am always an optimistic guy with a positive attitude and some how feel that everything will work out well and life has been difficult but nice to me even though I had no support from any quarter , but I am proud of myself not arrogant mind you , that I am a self made person and achieved what little I did all by myself with of course God by my side . I will see you in Visakhapatnam AMC / KGH - au revoir . AnasooyaAthreyaSeshaAnjaneyakrishna

Dr.Balakrishna M. Ramaraju : Me Krishna My Smoking Start to Finish January 1955 - November 1970 : I pause , I think , I ponder , I yield to the wish of my nephew and reminisce about how I started smoking my first cigarette and how I ended with my last cigarette . Why now you may ask , I say because I promised my nephew , a nice boy who is at the other end of globe enjoying Arab hospitality while I am on my side of Mother Earth savoring Ame...rican bonhomie with my family all over the world . Here it goes - my first cigarette , I take full responsibility , I can not blame my room mate , it is me who is to be blamed , the buck stops here with me , how I ended the credit goes to my children , about that you have to wait for a while . Now first things first - It was midnight of December 31st 1954 and we just rung in New Year 1955 . For me New Year starts with Sunrise , but I have to go along with the current and should not swim alone . We had a good sumptuous vegetarian feast and waiting for the first moment of January 1st 1955 . I was offered a Goldflake Cigarette , a fashionable one in those days . It was fun . I put it between my lips and my roommate lit my cigarette . I inhaled , coughed , let out smoke through my nostrils and felt an uplifting of my mood ; I must say I enjoyed that First Cigarette . Next morning I had my second goldflake after breakfast , then one after lunch , one more after dinner as new year being a holiday and I was in my hostel . Then onwards I used to lit a cigarette in a movie theatre ( in those days there was no ban on smoking in movie halls ) . The habit caught on and I thought Cigarettes are good for studying well , and for better performance during examination period . I am away from home and no one to say I am doing something wrong . I graduated from 3 cigarettes a day to 20 cigarettes a day by the time I completed my MBBS in June 1957 , MS General Surgery May 1962 , FRCS Edinburgh October 1968 . Me a constant feature with a box of cigarettes , a cigarette lighter , a cigarette between my lips with fire at one end and me the fool at the other end . By 1970 my lips , my fingers were stained cigarette color , my clothes smelling of cigarettes and me A Smoking Chimney . Now how I gave up that wretched habit after an indulgence of more than 15 years . My children , bless them started constantly complaining of smell , my setting a bad example and informing me it is not good and one day early November 1970 I promised them I will soon give up smoking as soon as I return back to Bhaarath ( India ) as I am still in England so far away from Motherland . I landed in by Air India Kanishka in Mumbai ( Bombay ) on 27th November 1970 , and the first thing I did was to light a fresh cigarette ( in those days smoking was not banned on board aircraft ) . As I started smoking my children reminded me of my promise to give up smoking after landing in Bhaarath ( India ) , I thought I should not let them down , felt ashamed at my own failure , so I threw away that last cigarette . Now I need to do something to wean me away from that habit . So I said let us all go to the Buddha's Place of enlightenment Bodh Gaya in Bihar . We all journeyed forth by Train to Bodh Gaya and I approached Buddham SaraNam Gacchaami , sought out the Peepal Tree , sat down under the shade of That Holy RAAVI ( Peepal ) Chettu ( Tree ) and took A Vow Bheeshma Prathijna on That Day Glorious Day 28th Novemebr 1970 not to smoke again . I stuck to that vow , fulfilled the promise I made to my children , Bless Them and Thanks To Them , now it has been 43 years and nearly 3 months that I am rid of my Smoking Habit to which I had been addicted to since 1st January 1955 for more than 15 years until 28th Novemeber 1970 . If not for anything else in my life I am always proud of my own achievement in giving up that addiction and the entire credit I lay down at the door of my children and now it is my nephew who takes the credit for making me recall my achievement - me I hope you do appreciate and give me some credit in my life a small thing may be for you but for me a giant of accomplishment - me AnasooyaAthreyaSeshaAnjaneyakrishna.ANASOOYAATHREYASeshaAnjaneyakrishna doctor balakrishna murthy ramaraju . Dr.Balakrishna M. Ramaraju : Thus began my independence . Unbridled freedom . Hostel life from July 1954 to June 1957 . Benefit and at the same time misuse of liberty . Away from a stern father and free from the confines of an ultra orthodox Braahmin household in Guntur faraway in beach town Visakhapatnam all by myself in Men's Hostel I became slightly wayward . It all started as a fun , I became A SMOKER of Cigarettes . My room mate in the hostel is a hypochondriac and a heavy smoker and addicted to drugs . Lucky for me he did not introduce me to Drugs , but he did introduce me to Smoking . It started on January First 1955 with One Cigarette to ring in the New Year . We had a feast in The Vegetarian Mess and my room mate offered me ONE CIGARETTE , I smoked , spluttered , coughed , and Liked IT . Touch wood No Alcohol indulgence , only smoking . Thus in January 1955 I started smoking one cigarette a day , then two a day , then after Breakfast , Lunch , and Dinner . Thus the habit of Cigarette smoking continued for more than 15 years (1955-1970) reaching A Zenith of Twenty Cigarettes A Day - THEN AFTER A SLAVERY , WHICH STARTED ON JANUARY FIRST 1955 AND LASTED FOR 15 YEARS 10 MONTHS 27 DAYS I GAVE UP SMOKING AS SUDDENLY AS I STARTED AND THAT LAST DAY OF MY LAST CIGARETTE WAS ON 28TH NOVEMBER 1970 IN BODH GAYA , BIHAR - sitting under a Peepal Tree , taking A Vow not to smoke again ( Krishna the smoker from January 01 , 1955 to November 28 ,1970 ) I will come to that at a later date at that time and how it happened . For the present be with me . But I am Happy to say that I did well in All My Clinical Subjects and passed every one of those subjects with good marks nothing to shout about from the house tops but I did well without any failure and completed my M B B S Degree in June 1957 , Andhra Medical College , Andhra University , Visakhapatnam . I could not celebrate because Tragedy struck as I lost my Father during my Final M B B S Examinations . I managed to complete my studies , came back to my Home in Guntur , Home where no more Is my Father . Several things happened during those tumultuous years 1954 - 1957 - I became A Cigarette Smoker , My Room Mate who introduced me to Cigarettes committed suicide . One class mate became mad under the stress of Medical College Graduation . Two class mates dropped out - one became A Medical Drug Company Representative , One just went away . But I did come out in spite of domestic tragedy and now there is no one to take me to task about my smoking . But to my surprise one gentleman came to visit me , he introduced himself as Doctor , a class mate of my late father , interviewed me at length about my studies , my habits , looked at me from various angles , I did not tell him about my smoking , so after a day long inquiry about me , the stranger understood all about me , my studies , my family , and my personality - Can You Guess , I know , That Gentleman came to select me as his prospective son in law , and I believe that my father just before his death has already approved the alliance and rest of my family have already seen the to be bride and my consent is taken for granted and only a formality . Strange you may think I never thought of going against my Father's Wish - so let it be An Arrangement Made By Two Gentlemen and I Bowed To Destiny - Then what happened - please wait . Dr.Balakrishna M. Ramaraju : My Life : July 1954 , my first full day away from home , muggy humid day . Men's hostel on a small hillock . Room mate Nageswararao from Guntur my home town , a smoker and a hypochondriac wakes up with a thermometer in his mouth maintains a temperature chart twice a day a record to tell him whether he is having any remittent , intermittent rise in body temperature or a nocturnal pyrexia and he is the one who introduced me to smoking , more about it at a later date . Today is big day for me D Day , day of orientation . Had a quick breakfast of Idli in the Vegetarian mess and got into college bus to meet the Principal and Heads Of Clinical Departments , The Clinical & ParaClinical Faculty of Andhra Medical College / King George Hospital , Visakhapatnam , henceforth AMC/KGH , Vizag . The Principal's Office is on a small hillock overlooking Bay Of Bengal . Vizag is a city of ups and downs , small hillocks and smaller valleys , lanes and culverts . I loved Vizag - love at first sight , a love lost but more of it later . Let me come to the present , and all third year medicos ( first year clinical students ) from GMC Guntur were presented at the Principal's Office and sticking to protocol we were introduced to The Stalwarts in the following Order - 1. That is how my first day started at AMC/KGH , Vizag and will continue so for the next three years until June 1957 . More of it as time passes on and we all know time and tide wait for none , but in those first few days I felt it was waiting and very slowly moving giving me time to adjust to a new life , an independent life , an adventure in my own life - so be it and if all ye if willing You can sit at side lines and see it as I go through it . ramaraju balakrishna murthy ( moorthy

Doctor Balakrishna Visakhapatnam AndhraBhaarath July 1954 - June 1957. February 7, 2014 at 8:07am I am done with Guntur Medical College . My first two years of pre-clinical medical education 1952 -1954 done with and over successfully . I have cleared all my preclinical subjects creditably - Anatomy , Embryology , Histology , Physiology , Biochemistry , Organic Chemistry , Dissections , Tracings of EKG / ECG , Muscle Contraction Curves . In 1954 I am now no longer a teenager . Guntur Medical College / Guntur Government General Hospital is not recognized by Indian Medical Council New Delhi for Clinical Phase of Medical Education . So now I am on way to Andhra Medical College Visakhapatnam then known as Vizag for the next three years of my Clinical Phase of Medical Education from July 1954 to June 1957 . Let me say a few words of Andhra Medical College ( AMC ) , King George Hospital ( KGH ) , Visakhapatnam ( Vizag ) , and Andhra University Waltair ( AU ) . AMC was originally Vizag Medical School offering Licentiate in Medical Practice Diploma ( LMP ) a three year course ( my father was an LMP ) . In early 1930s Vizag Medical School has become Andhra Medical College offering a five year Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery Degree ( MBBS ). KGH is an affiliated teaching hospital manned by Britishers and Indians . Vizag is a Bay of Bengal Coastal City towards North East of Madras Presidency and south of Calcutta ( Kolkata ) . AMC is older than Andhra University being originally affiliated to Madras University , but when in early 1940 when Andhra University was formed comprising of all educational institutions of Andhra Bhaarath Thelugu-speaking area , AMC became affiliated to Andhra University ( AU ) . AU is located in Waltair a beautiful suburb of Vizag , the whole City , perched right on the shores of Bay of Bengal being looked at from Dolphin's Hill and Blessed by Simhaadri Appanna . Now I am going to embark upon my journey to AMC / KGH / AU / Vizag and am very anxious . Let me get over my anxiety - please realize that for the first time I am leaving my birth town Guntur , going to be away from my family , on the way to become my own man away from the disciplinary surveillance of my stern father , so let me take some deep breaths , let me relax , let me overcome my fears , and then I will describe my virgin journey to a place far away , please abide and tarry with me - I will be back and we will journey together from Guntur to Visakhapatnam ..anasooyaathreyabaalakrishnamurthyramaraju
